The Louisiana Senate recently voted to advance a bill that would allow residents to vote to remove fluoride from their water supply.

Four notes:

1. Public water systems in the state with more than 5,000 service connections are currently required to add fluoride.

2. Senate Bill 4 would allow communities with fluoridated water to vote to have the mineral removed. Fifteen percent of the community’s residents would have to sign a petition to call a vote.

3. The state Senate approved the bill with a 26-7 vote April 8, according to state records. The bill now sits with the House of Representatives for consideration.

4. The Senate approved the bill after it was modified last month. A previous version of the bill would have removed the state’s fluoridation requirements for communities with more than 5,000 service connections and allowed local communities to vote on whether fluoride should be added to their water supply.
