The Illinois Senate has passed a bill to clarify when and how virtual dental care be utilized, according to a May 20 Illinois Senate Democrats.
Here are five things to know about Senate Bill 3211:
- Currently, an in-person visit is required before patients can utilize teledentistry. The bill removes the barrier, allowing for teledentistry to be used for preventive service, triage and follow-up care.
- The bill aims to address access to care gaps while maintaining strong professional dental standards.
- Children, seniors, individuals with disabilities and low-income families with transportation, mobility or scheduling challenges will have greater access to dental care and services.
- The bill enables dental care delivery in schools, long-term care facilities, community health centers and other settings where patients already are.
- Virtual dental care allows dentists to complete evaluations before making treatment recommendations, saving time and money.
