The University of Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine plans to end its oral and maxillofacial surgery advanced residency program at the end of the academic year.
The university decided to end the program due to challenges with meeting accreditation requirements. While the school has enough instructors to teach students at the pre-doctorate level in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department, it would not have had enough to instruct at the doctorate level to meet accreditation requirements from the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a spokesperson for the university told Becker’s.
The program currently has nine residents.
“School leadership reached the difficult decision this spring after determining the program could not sustain all aspects of the educational experience needed to satisfy stringent accreditation requirements for an OMFS residency program,” the spokesperson said. “[School of Dental Medicine] faculty and staff are working tirelessly to leverage their networks and help the residents find new residency programs. OMFS faculty and staff will continue to support the school’s doctor of dental surgery program, which is not impacted by the discontinuation of the OMFS advanced residency program.”
