Michigan’s Senate Health Policy Committee advanced a package of bills that would establish a state-based exchange for health and dental insurance, the Michigan Advance reported June 10.
Three notes:
1. Senate Bills 973 through 978 aims to expand coverage for residents in the state. Committee Chair Kevin Hertel also testified that the state can use revenue generated from the exchange market to conduct outreach in underinsured communities.
2. The exchange would be governed by a body made up of several members, four of whom would be selected by the governor. Other members include the director of the Department of Insurance and Financial Services and the director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
3. The bill now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
