The Rhode Island Senate recently passed a bill to create a licensure pathway for foreign-trained dentists and hygienists.
SB 2862 would make foreign-trained dentists and hygienists eligible for limited licenses under certain conditions. These dental professionals would have to graduate from a reputable training program and pass an exam determined by the Rhode Island Board of Examiners in Dentistry. They would then be required to practice under the direct supervision of another dentist for the first six months before becoming eligible for general supervision.
Dentists who hold these limited licenses would be excluded from working in a private practice setting.
The bill now sits with the state House of Representatives for approval.
