10 states with the highest number of dental shortage areas

California currently has the highest number of dental professional shortage areas, according to data from the Health Resources and Services Administration. 

The HRSA updated its dashboard showcasing data on health professional shortages June 15.

The dashboard shows there are 7,944 total dental professional shortage areas in the U.S., with 12,738 dental practitioners needed to fill those shortages.

Here are the top 10 states with the most shortage areas:

1. California: 591

2. Texas: 358

3. Missouri: 348

4. Alaska: 345

5. Florida: 292

6. Illinois: 289

7. Arizona: 287

8. Michigan: 274

9. Kentucky: 256

10. Minnesota: 229
