The Harvard School of Dental Medicine will transfer its Cambridge dental center to a private owner and discontinue its Faculty Group Practice due to financial challenges, The Harvard Crimson reported.
HSDM permanently closed the Harvard Dental Center in Cambridge in October 2025. The school cited financial concerns in addition to previous fire damage as reasons for the closure.
Dean William Giannobile, DDS, and Thomas Miller, the school’s dean of administration and COO, wrote in a June 18 email to HSDM affiliates that the school reached a provisional agreement with an unnamed private practice to reopen the practice. Staff affected by the transition can apply to work at the practice as long as the new owners agree.
The dental school will also end its Faculty Group Practice after the transition is completed, with Dr. Giannobile and Mr. Miller noting in their email that operating costs for the faculty practice had become “unsustainable.”
The Faculty Group Practice had been operating out of the school’s Longwood clinic since the October 2025 closure. The practice includes 13 faculty dentists and nine clinic staff members.
The school said it will devote its clinical space to its Teaching Practice in Longwood, which allows dental students and residents to provide care under faculty supervision.
