A former employee at Southport (Conn.) Family Dental has been charged with stealing more than $78,000 from the practice through a three-year scheme involving fraudulent credit card refunds, the Daily Voice reported June 22.
An investigation was launched after employees noticed unusual activity while the dental office was closed and suspicious credit card activity. Surveillance footage allegedly showed Barbara Economovich, 29, entering the building after hours, about a year after her employment ended. She reportedly said she returned to pick up an Invisalign tray, but one of the practice’s co-owners said she had already received all 21 of her trays months earlier.
Accountants also re-examined the practice’s books and identified more than 300 transactions allegedly linked to Ms. Economovich, totaling roughly $78,507.
Ms. Economovich was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, first-degree larceny and first-degree computer crime. She was released on a $75,000 bond.
