It is now in the hands of Gov. Ron DeSantis. Former Gov. Rick Scott had vetoed similar bills in the past. The reimbursement program would be limited to 10 dentists who would receive up to $50,000 per year for up to five years.
Florida is one of five states in the U.S. that doesn’t offer dental students a loan repayment program. Upon graduating, dentists are left with anywhere between $250,000 and $500,000 in debt.
The Florida Department of Health would run the dental student loan repayment program, which would be open to dentists who accept Medicaid and low-income patients.
