The American Dental Association is urging the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to prioritize prevention science, oral-systemic health research and dental data integration in its strategic plan for fiscal years 2027-31.
The ADA made recommendations in response to NIDCR’s request for information as it develops its next five-year strategic plan, according to a Sept. 14 news release. The ADA organized its recommendations around four areas: dental, oral and craniofacial research, integration with the broader biomedical enterprise, research capacity, and research operations.
Key recommendations include sustained investment in fundamental science such as oral microbiome research and inflammatory pathways; continued research on fluoride efficacy and safety; research on links between periodontal disease and systemic conditions; and development of harmonized dental data systems to support large-scale, real-world research.
The ADA also urged NIDCR to expand the dental research workforce by increasing support for dentist-scientists, and to fund practice-based research networks and shared analytic infrastructure.
