5 states with the highest, lowest number of female dentists

California has the highest number of professionally active female dentists, while Wyoming has the fewest, according to Kaiser Family Foundation data published April 20.

The ranking is based on information from Redi-Data on the amount of active state-licensed dentists.

In total, there are 188,152 active dentists in the U.S.

Five states with the highest number of female dentists:

 1. California: 10,610 female dentists
Male dentists: 17,655

2. Texas: 5,729 female dentists
Male dentists: 9,231

3. New York: 5,015 female dentists
Male dentists: 8,673

4. Florida: 4,078 female dentists
Male dentists: 6,331

5. Illinois: 2,865 female dentists
Male dentists: 5,025

Five states with the lowest number of female dentists: 

1. Wyoming: 47 female dentists
Male dentists: 215

2. Vermont: 102 female dentists
Male dentists: 231

3. North Dakota: 105 female dentists
Male dentists: 238

4. Idaho: 111 female dentists
Male dentists: 766

5. South Dakota: 117 female dentists
Male dentists: 277
