5 states with most, fewest dentists in 2022

California has the most active general dentists in the U.S., while Wyoming has the fewest, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The health policy nonprofit recorded the number of active dentists in seven categories, including general dentistry, oral surgery and orthodontics. The data was collected as part of a special request from the American Dental Association.

Top five states with the most and fewest number of active general dentists in the U.S.:

Most

  1. California: 25,205
  2. Texas: 12,541
  3. New York: 10,727
  4. Florida: 9,055
  5. Illinois: 7,154

Fewest

  1. Wyoming: 261
  2. Vermont: 288
  3. North Dakota: 325
  4. South Dakota: 385
  5. Rhode Island: 427
