Female oral, maxillofacial surgeons earn nearly 23% less than men in the field

Female oral and maxillofacial surgeons earn 22.8 percent less than men in the field, making it the specialty with the largest gender wage gap, according to Physicians Thrive’s “2023 Physician Compensation Report.”

For the report, Physicians Thrive compiled data from more than 12 sources, including Doximity, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Merritt Hawkins.

Here are the specialties with the largest gender wage gaps, according to Physicians Thrive:

Oral/maxillofacial surgery: women earn 22.8 percent less than men

Allergy and immunology: women earn 21.1 percent less than men

Otolaryngology: women earn 20.1 percent less than men

Pediatric nephrology: women earn 20 percent less than men

Thoracic surgery: women earn 19.5 percent less than men
