Employment levels for 6 dental roles

There were more than 120,000 general dentists in the U.S. in 2022, according to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The federal agency released updated compensation data for dental jobs on April 25 to reflect 2022 information.

Here are employment levels for six dental occupations: 

General dentists: 120,740

Dentists, all other specialties: 5,250

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons: 4,290

Orthodontists: 6,310

Dental assistants: 363,880

Dental hygienists: 214,700
