Two professors from Stony Brook University have received a $300,000 grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to determine whether dental imaging can be used to detect early signs of heart disease.

Mina Mahdian, DDS, an associate professor in the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Department of Prosthodontics and Digital Technology, and Prateek Prasanna, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, will work to develop an AI-driven tool that can automatically identify and characterize arterial calcifications.

This will be the first study in which researchers will use biomarkers to characterize calcifications in CBCT scans to predict cardiovascular disease, Dr. Mahdian said in a June 24 news release.
