Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed House Bill 567 into law, which expands teledentistry and access to oral healthcare throughout the state, according to a May 9 news release from the Georgia Dental Association.
Here are seven things to know:
- The new law reduces barriers to dental care while maintaining quality of care and creating consumer protections.
- Teledentistry services, as outlined in the law, are not intended to be a substitute for in-person dental care.
- Under the law, licensed dental professionals can provide consultations, second opinions, triage, evaluations and referrals via teledentistry.
- Consumer protections are included in the law to make sure that patients are receiving the same quality and level of care as in an in-person dental visit.
- A few of the protections are appropriate examinations, X-rays, a thorough review of medical and dental history, and in-person treatment when clinically necessary.
- The Georgia Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontics and the Georgia Board of Dentistry worked with lawmakers on the bill.
- The new law will take effect Jan. 1, 2026.
