Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed House Bill 567 into law, which expands teledentistry and access to oral healthcare throughout the state, according to a May 9 news release from the Georgia Dental Association.

Here are seven things to know:

  1. The new law reduces barriers to dental care while maintaining quality of care and creating consumer protections.
  2. Teledentistry services, as outlined in the law, are not intended to be a substitute for in-person dental care.
  3. Under the law, licensed dental professionals can provide consultations, second opinions, triage, evaluations and referrals via teledentistry.
  4. Consumer protections are included in the law to make sure that patients are receiving the same quality and level of care as in an in-person dental visit.
  5. A few of the protections are appropriate examinations, X-rays, a thorough review of medical and dental history, and in-person treatment when clinically necessary.
  6. The Georgia Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontics and the Georgia Board of Dentistry worked with lawmakers on the bill.
  7. The new law will take effect Jan. 1, 2026.
