The Illinois Senate has passed a bill to clarify when and how virtual dental care be utilized, according to a May 20 Illinois Senate Democrats.

Here are five things to know about Senate Bill 3211:

  1. Currently, an in-person visit is required before patients can utilize teledentistry. The bill removes the barrier, allowing for teledentistry to be used for preventive service, triage and follow-up care.
  2. The bill aims to address access to care gaps while maintaining strong professional dental standards.
  3. Children, seniors, individuals with disabilities and low-income families with transportation, mobility or scheduling challenges will have greater access to dental care and services.
  4. The bill enables dental care delivery in schools, long-term care facilities, community health centers and other settings where patients already are.
  5. Virtual dental care allows dentists to complete evaluations before making treatment recommendations, saving time and money.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
