A South Carolina Senate subcommittee has advanced a bill that would require dental professionals to conduct in-person examinations and review radiographic records before beginning orthodontic treatment.
Senate bill 453 builds upon the state’s Telehealth and Telemedicine Modernization Act that was enacted in March 2024, according to a Sept. 24 news release from the American Association of Orthodontists.
The Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee voted Sept. 11 to advance the bill to the full committee after hearing testimony from the AAO.
Several other states have passed similar legislation, including Oklahoma, Georgia, Nevada, Florida, Illinois, Utah and West Virginia.
