10 key statistics on periodontal disease — 8.5% of US adults impacted

While the incidence of periodontal disease has steadily declined over the past several decades, there are still substantial disparities among U.S. population groups, according to National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research data.

Here are 10 key statistics:

1. Periodontal disease impacts 8.52 percent of all U.S. adults.

2. Among females, 6.4 percent have periodontal disease.

3. Periodontal disease impacts 10.65 percent of males.

4. U.S. adults aged 50 to 64 years experience the highest rates of periodontal disease at 11.88 percent.

5. Following this cohort, adults aged 35 to 49 experience high rates of this disease at 10.41 percent.

6. Nearly 3.84 percent of adults aged 20 to 34 have periodontal disease.

7. Among Americans with incomes less than 199 percent of the federal poverty level, 13.95 percent have periodontal disease.

8. Of U.S. residents with income surpassing 200 percent of the federal poverty level, 5.96 percent have periodontal disease.

9. The disease impacts 14.74 percent of smokers, compared to 5.94 percent of Americans who have never smoked.

10. Periodontal disease impacts 5.78 percent of Americans who have more than a high school education and 17.33 percent of U.S. residents acquiring less than high school education.
