10 states most, least affected by surge in unemployment claims

Florida is the state with the most unemployment claims during the pandemic, according to a WalletHub ranking released May 21.

Nearly 39 million Americans have become unemployed since the week of March 16, pushing the unemployment rate to 17.2 percent.

WalletHub ranked the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on increases in unemployment claims, comparing the amount of claims filed in January and May of this year.

10 states with the largest increase in unemployment from January to May:

  1. Florida
  2. Mississippi
  3. Louisiana
  4. Washington
  5. Virgina
  6. North Carolina
  7. New Hampshire
  8. Texas
  9. District of Columbia
  10. Georgia

10 states with the smallest increase in unemployment from January to May:

  1. Maine
  2. Idaho
  3. Rhode Island
  4. Montana
  5. Pennsylvania
  6. Wisconsin
  7. New Jersey
  8. Iowa
  9. Wyoming
  10. Vermont
