A new survey shows individual enrollment in dental savings plans was up significantly in 2016, according to insurancenews.net.
Here are five things to know:
1. The individual enrollment increased 20 percent; as of 2016, there were 7.76 million people who enrolled as individuals in dental savings plans. Senior citizens led the increase, as Medicare doesn't cover dental services.
2. Young people also enrolled in higher numbers to achieve discounts on services that aren't covered by regular dental insurance, including teeth whitening.
3. Almost all — 89 percent — of the dental savings market is made up of individual plans, and some of the 1.28 million new individual plans last year were added through consolidation of plans that hadn't previously been reported to the National Association of Dental Plans.
4. Florida has the largest volume of discount dental enrollment, hitting 1.5 million enrollees and accounting for 7.6 percent of the state's population. Texas also had a higher percentage of dental savings plan enrollees, hitting 959,000 individuals.
5. In 2016, around 250 million Americans were covered by dental benefits.
