The area of dentistry with the most practitioners is general dentistry, with more than 159,000 general dentists across the U.S., according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The number of dentists in certain specialties was collected from the American Dental Association through a special data request.

Number of dentists by specialty:

General dentistry: 159,246

Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics: 10,921

Pediatric dentistry: 8,767

Oral and maxillofacial Surgery: 7,437

Endodontist: 5,717

Periodontist: 5,663

All other specialties: 5,222

The all other specialties category includes prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial pathology, public health dentistry, oral and maxillofacial radiology, dental anesthesiology, oral medicine and orofacial pain.
