9 specialty dental programs seeing growth, and 5 that declined

First-year enrollment in dental anesthesiology programs has seen 31.8 percent growth since 2018, according to data from the American Dental Association.

The American Dental Association tracks enrollment and financial data for accredited dental schools in the U.S. each year. 

Here is the percent change for first-year enrollment in accredited dental education programs from the 2018-19 academic year to the 2022-23 academic year, the latest year data is available: 

Advanced education in general dentistry: +2.6 percent

Dental anesthesiology: +31.8 percent

Dental public health: -13.2 percent

Endodontics: +1.4 percent

General practice residency: -0.4 percent

Oral and maxillofacial pathology: -15 percent

Oral and maxillofacial radiology: +14.3 percent

Oral and maxillofacial surgery: +4.2 percent

Oral medicine: +7.7 percent

Orofacial pain: -7.7 percent

Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics: +7.1 percent

Pediatric dentistry: +3.2 percent

Periodontics: +1.1 percent

Prosthodontics/maxillofacial prosthetics: -6.6 percent
