Dental hygienists earn $98,816 per year in Washington, the highest-paying state for the profession, according to career website ZipRecruiter.

Washington pays $12,196, or 14.1 percent, above the national average of $86,620.

ZipRecruiter collects its compensation data, which was updated Sept. 11, from employer job postings and third-party data sources. 

Here is the average annual salary in the 10 highest-paying states for dental hygienists:

1. Washington: $98,816

2. New York: $94,237

3. Maryland: $91,805

4. Virginia: $91,485

5. California: $91,081

6. Delaware: $90,605

7. Oklahoma: $86,920

8. Massachusetts: $86,469

9. Nevada: $86,084

10. Vermont: $84,687
