Dentists’ earnings in the top 10 states for business

General dentists have an average annual salary of $187,950 in Virginia, the best state for business, according to July 11 rankings from CNBC.

The publication ranked all 50 states using 128 metrics across 10 broad categories, with each state being able to earn a maximum of 2,500 points. Learn more about the study’s methodology here.

Salary data for dentists is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which released updated compensation data April 3 to reflect May 2023 information, the latest available.  

Here is the annual mean wage for dentists in the top 10 states for business:

1. Virginia: $187,950

2. North Carolina: $204,980

3. Texas: $220,000

4. Georgia: $208,560

5. Florida: $181,950

6. Minnesota: $211,100

7. Ohio: $186,880

8. Tennessee: $164,410

9. Michigan: $198,440

10. Washington: $216,280
