Average dental assistant income by practice type

Dental assistants working in corporate practices make an average of $40,430 annually — the least of any employment setting, according to DentalPost’s “2023 Dental Salary Survey” annual report.

DentalPost conducted its survey between July and September 2022 and received participation from 2,404 assistants. The survey addresses topics including compensation, job turnover and work environment. Read more about the methodology here.

Here are the average incomes of dental assistants across employment types, according to DentalPost:

Corporate practice (DSOs): $40,430

Specialist private practice: $42,010

Private practice: $42,200

Other: $43,310

Note: The “Other” category represents employment by public schools, hospitals, military, prisons, mobile clinics, universities and Native American reservation clinics.
