The average annual salary for general dentists has increased from $178,260 in 2019 up to $196,100 in 2024.

Dentist compensation jumped a total of $17,840, or 10%, from 2019 to 2024.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated compensation data April 2 to reflect 2024 information, the latest available. 

Here is how the average annual wage and average hourly wage have changed for general dentists from 2021 to 2024, along with the state where dentists earned the most each year.

Mean annual wage: $178,260

Mean hourly wage: $85.70

Highest-paying state: Rhode Island, annual mean wage of $262,900

2020

Mean annual wage: $180,830, year-over-year increase of $2,570

Mean hourly wage: $86.94

Highest-paying state: Rhode Island, annual mean wage of $258,920

2021

Mean annual wage: $167,160, year-over-year decrease of $13,670

Mean hourly wage: $80.37

2022
