Outside of general practice, orthodontics is the dental specialty with the highest number of dentists, according to data from the American Dental Association.
There are more than 10,000 dentists in the orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics specialty. Pediatric dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery are the specialty with the second- and third-most dentists.
Across the U.S., there were more than 202,000 dentists in 2024, with the majority practicing general dentistry.
