Number of dentists across 12 specialties

Outside of general practice, orthodontics is the dental specialty with the highest number of dentists, according to data from the American Dental Association. 

There are more than 10,000 dentists in the orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics specialty. Pediatric dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery are the specialty with the second- and third-most dentists. 

Across the U.S., there were more than 202,000 dentists in 2024, with the majority practicing general dentistry. 

Here is the number of dentists across 12 dental specialties, excluding general dentistry, according to the ADA’s Health Policy Institute. 

Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics: 10,830

Pediatric dentistry: 9,312

Oral and maxillofacial surgery: 7,424

Endodontics: 5,685

Periodontics: 5,471

Prosthodontics: 3,540

Public Health Dentistry: 734

Oral and maxillofacial pathology: 428

Oral and maxillofacial radiology: 213

Dental anesthesiology: 156

Orofacial pain: 72

Oral medicine: 38
