Number of dentists in 12 specialty fields

Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics have the largest representation out of 12 dental specialty fields, with 10,904 orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedists in 2023, according to data from the American Dental Association.

The ADA’s Health Policy Institute released 2023 data on the supply of dentists across different specialties in January.

Here is the number of dentists  that 12 different dental fields had in 2023, excluding general practice dentists:

Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics: 10,904

Pediatric dentistry: 9,183

Oral and maxillofacial surgery: 7,440

Endodontics: 5,759

Periodontics: 5,542

Prosthodontics: 3,584

Public health dentistry: 782

Oral and maxillofacial pathology: 428

Oral and maxillofacial radiology: 204

Dental anesthesiology: 141

Orofacial pain: 53

Oral medicine: 30
