Percentage of dentists affiliated with a DSO by specialty

Orthodontists have the highest rate of DSO affiliation when compared to dentists in seven other dental specialties, according to May data from the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute.

The ADA Health Policy Institute Dental Office Database is based on all practicing dentists in the U.S. that HPI can assign at least one practice location address. It includes analysis of 191,669 out of 202,401 practicing dentists in the U.S. Read more about the methodology here.

Here is the percentage of dentists in eight specialties that are affiliated with a DSO:

General practice dentistry: 13 percent

Endodontics: 12 percent

Oral and maxillofacial surgery: 13 percent

Orthodontics: 18 percent

Pediatric dentistry: 11 percent

Periodontics: 10 percent

Prosthodontics: 9 percent

Other: 8 percent
