General dentists in Cape Coral-Fort Meyers, Fla., have the highest average annual salary of any metropolitan area in the U.S., making $275,110 per year. 

The average salary for dentists in the Coast Oregon nonmetropolitan area is $279,680 annually, the highest out of any nonmetropolitan area. 

Across the U.S., general dentists earn an average of $196,100 each year. 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated compensation data for general dentists April 2 to reflect 2024 information. 

Here are the 10 metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas where dentists have the highest mean annual salary:

  1. Coast Oregon nonmetropolitan area: $279,680
  2. Cape Coral-Fort Meyers, Fla.: $275,110
  3. Sussex Delaware nonmetropolitan area: $268,590
  4. Sherman-Denison, Texas: $262,060
  5. Northwest Illinois nonmetropolitan area: $260,810
  6. St. Cloud, Minn.: $256,870
  7. Rochester, Minn.: $255,530
  8. Auburn-Opelika, Ala.: $252,650
  9. Burlington-South Burlington, Vt.: $252,430
