Which states have the most, fewest dentists per capita?

The District of Columbia has the highest number of dentists per capita in the U.S., according to data from the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute. 

In total, there are more than 205,000 dentists working in dentistry in the U.S., and 60 dentists for every 100,000 residents. 

There are seven states and Washington, D.C., with at least 70 dentists per capita, compared to 15 states that have fewer than 50 dentists per capita.

Here are the 10 states with the most and fewest active dentists per capita:

1. District of Columbia: 100.9 dentists per capita
2. Massachusetts: 81.8 dentists per capita
3. Hawaii: 80.4 dentists per capita
4. Alaska: 77.9 dentists per capita
5. California: 77.9 dentists per capita
6. New Jersey: 77.3 dentists per capita
7. New York: 71.4 dentists per capita
8. Washington: 70.4 dentists per capita
9. Maryland: 68.7 dentists per capita
10. Connecticut: 68.1 dentists per capita

1. Alabama: 40.6 dentists per capita
2. Arkansas: 40.8 dentists per capita
3. Mississippi: 43.5 dentists per capita
