ADA won't recommend postponing dental care amid COVID-19 surges

As the pandemic continues, the American Dental Association doesn't plan on recommending dental practices postpone non-urgent procedures, as it did this spring.

The ADA "firmly believes" dental care can continue to be delivered safely, ADA President Daniel Klemmedson, DDS, MD, said in a Nov. 20 email to members.

Dr. Klemmedson noted that to date, there hasn't been documented transmission of COVID-19 in a clinical dental setting, according to the CDC. Furthermore, a study in The Journal of the American Dental Association found that fewer than 1 percent of U.S. dentists were estimated to have COVID-19 as of June.

Dr. Klemmedson said the ADA will continue to actively monitor the situation.
