Florida city moves forward with water fluoridation project after debate: 3 notes

Commissioners in Leesburg, Fla., voted to move forward with a $600,000 project to add fluoride to the city’s water supply, the Daily Commercial reported Dec. 17.

Three notes:

1. The city approved the water fluoridation project at the urging of dentists in June, but another vote was added after a request came from a commissioner who was reluctant to approve the project.

2. The commission approved the project with a 3-2 vote Dec. 16 after a heated debate and public comments.

3. Several Florida cities are weighing water fluoridation after Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, MD, PhD, spoke against the practice last month.
