Five notes:
1. The Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists recently published an article exploring the potential health impacts of microplastic exposure caused by clear aligners.
2. The AAO said Dec. 11 that it does not hold a formal position on the issue because there is currently not enough research to draw definitive conclusions.
3. In an effort to support further research, the AAO has brought together a team of researchers to review all existing studies on the topic.
4. The AAO Board of Trustees has also asked the AAO Foundation’s Planning and Awards Review Committee to request new research proposals, which may lead to funding for further studies.
5. The organization said it encourages continued innovation of clear aligners to ensure a focus on patient well-being during orthodontic treatment.
