The American Dental Association is urging the EPA to utilize evidence-based studies and analyses during any review of the safety of fluoride in drinking water, according to a June 12 news release from the ADA.

Here are five things to know:

  1. The ADA also called on the EPA to apply Safe Drinking Water Act review protocols and disregard literature and studies that do not meet the standards.
  2. The act requires the EPA to follow certain protocols while weighing changes to its national primary drinking water regulations.
  3. The organization compiled a list of studies that are likely suitable for a six-year review.
  4. The ADA is set to release the latest version of its fluoridation resource in June.
  5. In April, the EPA said that it will “expeditiously review” new information on the potential health risks of fluoride.
