The American Dental Association is urging lawmakers to support scientific oversight of potential federal fluoride regulations.
Five notes:
1. The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Environment held a hearing Feb. 24 titled “From Source to Tap: A Hearing to Examine Challenges and Opportunities for Safe, Reliable, and Affordable Drinking Water.”
2. The ADA submitted comments to subcommittee members highlighting the impact drinking water policies can have on oral health.
3. The organization urged members to back the Protect Our TEETH Act, HR 4556.
4. The bill, introduced in July, would amend the Safe Drinking Water Act to require the Environmental Protection Agency to consult and publish research by independent and nonpartisan experts at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine when proposing new water fluoridation guidance.
5. EPA recently said it plans to review new information on the potential health risks of fluoride and create an updated assessment.
