Six notes:

1. In its March 4 letter, the ADA urged EPA to continue its appeal against a court order that directs the agency to further regulate fluoride in public water systems.

2. In September, a federal judge sided with the citizens and ordered the EPA to “engage with a regulatory response” due to the potential risks of water fluoridation. EPA filed its appeal in January.

3. The dental agency said the court ruling sets a precedent that could force EPA to regulate substances without proper risk assessment.

4. Additionally, the ADA urged EPA to “proceed cautiously” if the organization is considering reforms to its dental office wastewater pretreatment standard.

5. The ADA said sudden regulatory changes on wastewater pretreatment could negatively impact dental practice operations and finances.

6. Lastly, the ADA pushed EPA to maintain the U.S. position supporting a phasedown of dental amalgam under the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
