The American Dental Association pushed back on comments made by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton about the safety and efficacy of fluoride toothpaste for children.

The ADA reaffirmed its stance that fluoride, in recommended amounts, is safe and effective at preventing tooth decay in children and adults, according to a May 7 news release from the organization.

Mr. Paxton sent civil investigative demands to Colgate-Palmolive and Procter & Gamble to investigate the toothpaste manufacturers for marketing tactics that are “misleading, deceptive and dangerous.”

The association recommends children use an amount of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice or a pea, depending on their age.

Fluoride toothpaste makes up more than 95% of toothpaste sales in the U.S., according to the CDC.
