The American Dental Association has released draft standards on cartridge syringes and athletic mouth protectors, according to an April 28 news release.

Here are seven things to know:

  1. The proposed ANSI/ADA Standard No. 34 for Dentistry — Cartridge Syringes is a modified adoption of ISO 9997:2020 Dentistry — Cartridge Syringes.
  2. The new standard specifies the requirements and test methods for cartridge syringes for use in dentistry.
  3. The standard applies to nonaspirating, aspirating and self-aspirating syringes using cartridges with dental local anesthetics, and not cartridge syringes having a mechanical-advantage action for creating high pressure.
  4. The revision also specifies requirements for cartridge syringes with ISO metric thread sizes.
  5. The proposed Standard No. 99 for Dentistry — Athletic Mouth Protectors and Materials creates requirements and test methods for assessing the physical properties of athletic mouth protectors and materials devices.
  6. Materials covered under the standard include thermoplastic, thermosetting and digitally processed materials, with or without a polymeric shell.
  7. Requirements for manufacturer’s instructions, packaging, labeling and marking for mouth protectors are also listed in the standard.
