The ADA added a category for orally administered analgesics for the temporary management of acute dental pain, according to an April 19 news release.

The update comes after the federal dental agency released new guidelines for pain management of adult and adolescent dental patients and dental patients under the age of 12. The ADA recommended nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as a first-line therapy for acute pain management after determining that these drugs are more effective at reducing pain than opioid analgesics.
