ADA warns against latest TikTok trend

The American Dental Association is speaking out against the latest TikTok trend it says may be harmful to oral health.

A recipe involving mixing flavored sparkling water with balsamic vinegar is being shared widely across the social media platform as a healthier alternative to soda, the ADA said in a June 14 news release.

The ADA shared a May study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association Foundational Science showing that acids in sugar-free beverages can erode tooth enamel. Adding an additional acid, the vinegar, could further increase the risk of enamel erosion, the ADA said.

The recipe follows a list of other oral health-related TikTok trends dentists have recently advised against, including closing tooth gaps with rubber bands, whitening teeth with abrasive sponges and using InstaMorph beads to create prosthetic teeth.
