The North Carolina Dental Board issued updated sedation guidelines to dental practices, according to an April 7 report from WFMY News 2.

The memo, along with a broader interpretive statement from the board, focused on how sedation should be handled, as well oversight and responsibility.

The board said that recent issues with sedation have come up during its recent investigations around North Carolina.

Dentists and dental practices were warned that to perform procedures that require sedation, the dentist must have the proper anesthesia permit; the sedation level cannot exceed what the dentist is licensed to provide; and dentists supervising certified registered nurse anesthetists must be present while the procedure is being administered.

The dental board sent out the “urgent message” in February, the report said.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
