Sen. Dawn Keefer plans to introduce a bill that would ban fluoride from being added to public drinking water in the state.

The Fluoride Choice Act promotes individual choice by instead supporting access to fluoride through supplements or topical applications.

Sen. Keefer cited a 2024 study published in JAMA Pediatrics that linked higher fluoride exposure to lower IQ scores in children. However, James Boyle III, DDS, told Fox 43 that the research is flawed and referenced fluoride amounts double the recommended levels.

The bill is modeled after Utah’s fluoride ban, which was enacted in March. The Florida Legislature also recently passed its own bill banning fluoride statewide. Several other states are considering either banning community water fluoridation or making it optional in municipalities.
