The test uses molecular technology to test for and measure periodontal bacteria, caries, fungal and viral targets, according to a March 21 news release from Spectrum.

It is estimated that 80% of individuals in the U.S. older than 35 have a form of gum disease, which decreases the ability to fight infections and inflammation.

With the new test, patients are able to collect their own sample, which is then sent to Spectrum’s laboratories to provide independent, third-party results, the release said.
