The Unified Patent Court, which is backed by 18 European Union member states, has ruled in favor of Tempe, Ariz.-based Align Technology in a patent infringement case against Shanghai, China-based Angelalign.

The court determined that aligner systems with Angelalign’s Torque Ridges feature infringe Align’s Power Ridge technology patent, according to an Oct. 16 news release from Align Technology.

Angelalign must cease its offerings of systems that incorporate the Torque Ridges in 17 countries, recall and destroy infringing products and pay damages to Align Technology. The court also rejected Angelalign’s challenges to the validity of the patent.

In August 2025, Align filed multiple patent infringement lawsuits against Angelalign. In August 2026, a court in China issued a judgment finding that Angelalign’s use of its MasterForce biomechanical simulation system and ATreat digital orthodontic treatment design system infringes Align’s patent rights.

The decision of the Unified Patent Court is subject to appeal, the release said.
