The West Virginia University School of Dentistry has joined several other schools in testing a new material for clear aligners.
The clear aligners are created using 3D printers from Graphy Inc., a Korean technology company. The “shape memory” material uses thermoplastic to create aligners that soften when exposed to hot water, making it easier for patients to put in their mouths. The aligners harden back to their original shape once they are placed inside the mouth.
The thermoplastic is recognized as a better addition to tooth attachments, and also allows for varying levels of thickness to move patients’ teeth more efficiently, according to a June 9 news release.
