Meagan Baker and Kayla Baker worked at the office of Brian Shields, DDS, in DeMotte, Ind. The office closed in July 2023 after Dr. Shields became aware of accounting irregularities.

Police began investigating and found the women allegedly convinced patients to pay cash in order to receive a discount for services. Investigators said the women did not deposit the cash into the dentist’s bank account but that some funds were allegedly deposited into Kayla’s bank account. Investigators also found that payment records were allegedly deleted from the practice’s computer system.

Kayla faces felony charges of corrupt business influence, fraud, obstruction of justice, forgery and theft of at least $50,000. Meagan Baker faces felony charges of corrupt business influence, fraud, obstruction of justice and theft of at least $50,000.
