Police officer shot, man dead at Georgia dental office

A police officer was critically injured and a suspect is dead after an incident at McDonough, Ga.-based Smile Creators Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, according to WSAV 3.

According to the Henry County (Ga.) Police Department, a man identified as Dimaggio McNelly walked into the dental office and caused a disruption. The police were called, and Henry County police officer Michael Smith attempted to speak with Mr. McNelly.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Mr. McNelly became combative, and Officer Smith deployed his taser multiple times. Mr. McNelly lunged at the officer, and the GBI stated one shot was fired which struck both Mr. McNelly and the officer.

Officials say the officer was shot in the face and is undergoing surgery at Atlanta-based Grady Memorial Hospital. Mr. McNelly was pronounced dead at the scene.
