Spokane, Wash., dentist James Stein-Sheridan Shelby, DDS, pleaded guilty March 19 to fraudulently prescribing opioids and distributing the narcotics to a former patient, according to The Spokesman-Review.
In federal court, the dentist admitted to having an “inappropriate relationship” with the former patient for several years and pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute drugs and distributing medically unnecessary hydrocodone.
Federal agents searched Dr. Shelby’s practice last April. The dentist was aware a search warrant had been presented because of his prescribing patterns.
Beginning in 2015, Dr. Shelby wrote 41 opioid prescriptions, totaling 2,116 tablets, to the former patient he had an inappropriate relationship with. That patient ended up becoming addicted to opioids. The dentist also used false names to funnel hundreds of opioids to the patient.
Dr. Shelby's sentencing is scheduled for May 15.
